ROBIN
HOOD: A MONOLOGUE
Leticia was eight years old. She moved with a whirl and swirl of her long
black hair as she danced her way into Sunday School each week.
She moved faster and more often than any other child in the class.
One Sunday she swished into the room and announced to everyone that God
was just like Robin Hood. We all
knew that the Disney cartoon version of Robin Hood was her favorite movie. She told us at least once a week. But how she had now made the connection between God and the
character in the movie was completely beyond me. So I asked her.
“OK Leticia, how is God like Robin Hood?”
She laughed and said, “The minister told us in the Bible reading before
we came into Sunday School.”
The scripture that day had been Mary’s song, “The Magnificat” from
Luke, chapter one.
Leticia continued, “He said that when Mary found out she was pregnant
with Jesus, she talked about how God cares for hungry people and poor people.”
“That’s right,” I said.
“Well,” Leticia concluded, “so does Robin Hood.
See, God is just like Robin Hood!”
She was right. So now I have
to add to all my other images for God a cartoon fox in bright green tights. Deepening Faith: Youth Ministry Resources and Some Miscellaneous Advice Rev. Lizann Bassham, Front Porch Spirit Press Copyright © 2001
