HAVE
NO FEAR A
READING BASED ON MATTHEW 10:26-27 Reader 1:
Jesus said, “So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered that will not be
revealed, or hidden that will not be known.
What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light, and what you hear
whispered, proclaim upon the housetops.” Reader 2:
Each of us has something we are afraid of. Reader 3:
Some of them are silly…Some are more serious. Reader 4:
When I was a little kid, I was afraid of my closet.
I just knew there were monsters in there waiting to jump out and get me.
Every night I had my grandma check for them, and everything was fine
until she turned out the lights. Then
I could hear them scratching at the door, big green monsters.
I’m not afraid of monsters in my closet anymore. I know they don’t
really exist, but there are things that do exist, like AIDS, or terrorists.
As I get older, it seems my fears get worse. I wish I could just worry
about monsters in my closet instead! Reader 5:
When I was little I was afraid of the dark. Readers 1
& 2:
Me too! Reader 5:
The dark was so, well, dark, and you couldn’t see... Reader 1:
You never knew what was out there… Reader 5:
It could be anything! And when the house was dark, it seemed like my Mom’s
room was so far away! And it took forever to go down the hall to the bathroom.
Sometimes I ran all the way! I’m not as afraid of the dark anymore, and
things that aren’t real. I’m
more afraid of real things now, like mean teachers who yell at you, or
earthquakes. The dark is almost
friendly compared to that! Reader 6:
When I was little I was afraid of getting run over by the garbage truck… Reader 1:
The garbage truck? Reader 6:
Yea, it was big and noisy and I had nightmares that I would accidentally fall
into the trash and no one would hear me scream and they’d dump me into the
truck and it would close… Readers
2:
Gross! What are you afraid of now? Reader 6:
Lots of things – getting pantsed at school, or having to give a speech in
front of people… Reader 2:
Now that’s scary! When I was little, I was afraid that Scooby Doo was going to
die. I don’t know what I would
have done, I loved Scooby Doo! He was so funny, and he always saved Shaggy!
I know now that cartoons don’t die, but people do, and I’m afraid of
friends or family members dying, or of going to funerals. Reader 1:
I wouldn’t have cared if Scooby Doo died.
When I was little I was afraid of dogs.
They were loud, and had teeth and always knocked me down. Now that I’m
big, of course, I’m not afraid of them anymore.
I’m afraid of really important things like, what if my allowance got
taken away, or my radio melted, or the stock market crashed again! Reader 3:
Money! That’s not important – I was afraid of big people. I was even afraid
of Santa Claus. Everybody wanted me
to sit on this big, fat man’s lap. He had lots of hair and a big beard, and a
loud voice. That’s scary! I’m not afraid of Santa anymore, but I am afraid of people
who are bigger and stronger than me because they could hurt me, or make me do
things I don’t want to do. That’s
scary. Reader 6:
Each of us has things we are afraid of. Reader 2:
Some of them are silly… Reader 5:
Some of them are serious. Reader 7:
There are lots of things in the world to be afraid of, but God knows about all
of our fears. God wants to help us not be afraid, and to learn how and where to
get help when we are afraid or have been hurt. Reader 8:
God works in our lives everyday to help us.
God works through the adults we live with… Reader 7:
…our teddy bears… Reader 8:
…the telephone; I know I can always get help on the telephone, or call my
friends when I’m upset… Reader 7:
…or my skateboard; when I’m skating everything is OK… Reader 8:
…or my journal; it really helps to write things down… Reader 7:
…or my dog… Reader 8:
We all have lots of fears, but God knows about them all and wants to help us not
be afraid. Deepening Faith: Youth Ministry Resources and Some Miscellaneous Advice Rev. Lizann Bassham, Front Porch Spirit Press Copyright © 2001 |
