CREATION

A READING OF GENESIS 1:1-2:3

There are so many wonderful things you can do with the first story of Creation found in Genesis.  One thing would be to divide up each day among seven readers (one for each day) and brainstormed things you could do during the reading to bring it to life for the congregation. Here are some ideas.

Day one: God moves over the face of the deep and there is light and darkness.

·       Begin in darkness

·       have water and wind sounds during the reading of the first day

·       turn the sanctuary lights back on as the reader says, “let there be light”

Day two: God creates the firmament and separates the waters from the waters

·       More water sounds, ocean waves, rain, etc.

Day three: God creates dry land and brings forth plants.

·       when the dry land appears have someone stand in front with a container of sand and let it pour through their fingers

·       at the appropriate part of the reading, have people carry potted plants forward and arrange them in the chancel

Day four: God creates the sun, moon, and stars.

·       twinkle Christmas lights are fun at this point, flashlights, glowsticks, and even those annoying laser pointers that Jr. High boys love to play with

Day five: God creates birds and fish

·       sounds of water and wind

·       sounds of birds chirping

·       paper airplanes flown across the chancel to simulate birds

Day six: God creates all the animals, including humans.

·       at the appropriate place have people bring stuffed animals forward

·       sounds of all kinds of animals

·       a few humans posing throughout the chancel when God creates them

Day seven: God appreciates creation and rests

  • lots of appreciative ohhs and ahhhs
  • everyone lays down in the chancel after a few exaggerated yawns
